This book is great for students and residents rotating in a pediatric intensive care unit. Cases include RSV, fulminant meningococcal septicemia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, TCA poisoning, management of a status-post Fontan child, non-accidental trauma, head injury, diabetic ketoacidosis, and more. There are about 26 cases in all. They are very thorough and include minute-by-minute management strategies and a separate discussion section to further explain current standards of management for the particular condition. My only complaint, and it's a big one, is that the book is written by a mix of Brits and Americans, and the units of measurement change case by case between traditional and SI units. I don't know if a PaCO2 of 6.82kPa is good or not! Or a glucose of 62mmol/L? I wouldn't mind if there was a page or two of conversions, which would be easy to add to the next edition. Also, there are some differences in terminology that may make you scratch your head e.g. calling PE or "pressure-equalizing" tubes "grommets." That one I kind of liked.
